We`ve never found Poonam`s Gujarati Mandal empty. That should be proof enough of the food here. It`s Gujarati food (yeah, like you hadn`t already figured that out from the name!!) and as they say, the prrof of the Gujarati pudding is in the eating. The service style here is called the `thali` system, just like our weddings where you sit down to eat and the food is brought around and ladled into your plates. It`s all vegetarian here. The sabzis are varied and all are great, served as they are with a sweetish dal and a sweetish curds-kadi, and steaming hot phulkas/puris, khichdi, pickles, fried snacks etc. Quantities are unlimited, eat all you can. In mango season, the aam-ras (mango pulp) served as dessert as well as to go with piping hot puris, is the star of the show. One of the best in Chennai.
